13th century

Showing all 7 results

The dress of the 13th century has the simplest lines of any medieval clothing — and that is exactly what makes it the hardest to get right. This category holds the basics: T-cut shirts and chemises with underarm gussets, bias-cut tied hose, the padded arming cap and hood, and the T-shaped gambeson.
Every piece is made by hand with French seams, in linen or wool, based on period depictions and finds. Sizes are individual: we cut to your measurements rather than picking from stock.

The Basics of 13th-Century Clothing

Clothing in the 13th century is built from straight, T-cut pieces. Our shirts and chemises are made of linen with underarm gussets, just as they were at the time, so the garment does not pull when you move. We use French seams: the raw edges are turned inside, so the piece is neat on the inside too and does not fray in the wash.

The hose are cut from wool on the bias. This is what makes them close-fitting and comfortable at the same time, and you pull them on like stockings. The pattern is based on a depiction in Katrin Kania's Kleidung im Mittelalter . The hose are tied up with points (laces with aiglets), which are sold as a separate item.

Padded Garments for Helmet and Armour

The T-cut gambeson, the padded arming cap and the padded arming hood are made of 750 g linen with a wadding core and a linen lining. The gambeson can also be ordered with a wool fabric lining, which brings the weight to about 4.5 kg, or with twenty layers of linen, at around 7.5 kg. The cap and the hood are padded so that a metal helmet protects the wearer better. The small linen coif (infula) was also worn on its own against the summer sun.
